The first book reports will be given the week of October 13 through 15. You should have your assigned date by now. Be sure to get your book approved in advance and have a copy on the day of your report. Permission slips are required for adult reading such as Stephen King or Anne Rice. I suggest that you explore the lists of classics at the back of my room, or at this web site. The report should last approximately five minutes and include the following:
1. Introduce the title and author.
2. If the author is famous, discuss some relevant biographical information.
3. Mention the setting; i.e. the time and place. For some novels this is extremely important.
4. Mention and identify the main characters.
5. Discuss the theme if there is one. Many murder mysteries have no theme at all.
6. Plot - this will make up the bulk of your report. Discuss the sequence of events in your story and time your report by practicing at home.
7. Conclusion - Try to use some of the critical terms that we have used in discussing literature this year. Focus on conflict, resolution, climax, and symbols. Give your opinion of the book and your recommendations as to who or what age group should read or should not read the novel.
All Students: You may use the lectern or you may stand in front of it. You are permitted to use three by five index cards for notes, but most of your report should be memorized. Keep good eye contact and
